Save the Great Salt Lake!

To maintain and improve our quality of life along the Wasatch Front, it is imperative that the overall health of the Great Salt Lake become a priority of the Utah Legislature.

The Great Salt Lake has shrunk to half of its size since the mid-1980’s, and now is the time for the citizens of Utah to act to save the lake for future generations of Utahns before it is too late. We must not allow the lake to dry up!  The health of the Great Salt Lake will determine the future of the air quality along the Wasatch Front, the health of our snowpacks in our mountains each year, and the overall precipitation each year along the Wasatch Front.  I will fight to give this issue the attention it desperately deserves.

Reproductive Freedom = Economic Freedom

With the overturning of Roe V. Wade in late June 2022, the reproductive freedoms that women have enjoyed for fifty years were stripped away.

Like many states, Utah had an abortion ban trigger law go into effect upon the overturning of Roe.  Utah’s abortion ban is a disaster for women of Utah on so many levels.  The Utah abortion ban will not stop abortion, it will end safe abortions.  I will fight to end Utah’s abortion law, and restore the reproductive rights women had under Roe.  History has shown that women cannot have economic freedom without first having bodily autonomy.  We cannot allow ourselves to go back to a time when women were second class citizens in society!

Education

I believe that investment in our public schools is key to the future success of Utah.

Our greatest covenant is that with our future generations. Every child in Utah deserves a quality education. The Utah Constitution enshrined a permanent school fund to ensure that all Utah children would have access to the best possible education. However, our legislature has failed to use and develop this fund to provide the resources our children desperately need. I will work to bring more resources to Utah’s K-12 schools and to make higher education better and more accessible. Utah should build the best public education system in America.  In addition, we should give teachers the respect they deserve. They are the foundation of a good economy and good citizenry. Utah has some of the largest classroom sizes in the nation, and for too long succumbed to the Republican philosophy of, “Pack them deep, and teach them cheap”. Also, too many of our best teachers face burnout and leave the classroom after only a few years on the job. I know this first hand being a spouse of a long time elementary school teacher. We need to increase compensation and provide more resources for textbooks, supplies, technology support, special needs students, counseling, and career training for our teachers.

Public Lands

I believe it is critical that we protect Utah’s wild places for future generations.

The natural beauty of Utah is our greatest asset, and there is no other place on earth like it. We must stop developers, fossil fuel companies, and mining companies from destroying Utah’s unique natural landscape. I support America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act and look to implement it on a state level. No amount of short term profit will ever be worth the destruction of Utah’s wild places.
